Some bright spark once remarked: “Even if you are on the right track, you’ll get run over if you just sit there.”
And this is the philosophy of Engen Santos. We continually strive to make improvements to the manner in which we do things.
In this business of football, a club cannot afford to be stagnant. It has to keep moving; it has to keep with the times; it has to stay in touch with modern trends in world football.
Here, at Engen Santos, I believe we are in the process of fulfilling one of the ambitions closest to my heart: We are returning the Engen Santos Football Club back to the people who played for it. We now have a large number of former players at the helm of the club - Edries Burton (chief operations officer), Duncan Crowie (head of youth), Donnie Ronnie (head of security), Keith America (under-19 coach) and last week we brought in Rodney Reiners to head our media and communications department.
I have also managed to persuade another former player, Rodney Theys, to come on board to head the club’s amateur division. These are all men who know the history, culture and inside outs of this club like they do the back of their hands.
In this sense, then, we remain the ultimate People’s Team, in that it is run by people who hold the club dear, by the community of the Cape, and by the club’s growing support base.
Another plus that warms the cockles of my heart is the continued emergence of our youth development programme. I have always maintained that I want to ensure that Engen Santos retain a 75% local Cape Town content in its teams… and we are well on the way to achieving this goal.
Lastly, and this remains a major challenge to the club, I would like to appeal to loyal Engen Santos fans to continue their support of the club… and to encourage others to come to the ground. In this way, we can create a more exciting vibe at Athlone Stadium.
The PSL side has delivered the results and performances and are now in fifth spot on the Absa Premiership log… now it’s up the fans to reward the players with passion from the terraces.
