CHAIRMAN'S CHAT PART IV

11 APRIL 2008

Soccer is on the up in the Mother City - Chairman Goolam Allie is proud that Engen Santos are playing their part . . .

There’s a real buzz about Cape Town football right now.

Having accompanied Danny Jordaan to an inspection of the new Green Point Stadium, I was overwhelmed by the magnificent progress made there.

As Danny Jordaan said during an interview for the international media: he has seen many stadia across the world, but he believes that, when Green Point is completed, it will be among the top three in the world. In terms of scope, architecture, position and view, it is simply amazing.

Green Point is earmarked as the main venue for the World Cup when 2010 arrives, with Athlone Stadium a training venue.

Athlone, too, is coming on nicely and the facelift of the famous Cape Town football landmark will provide another monumental step forward for the sport in the Mother City.

In keeping with this stadium buzz, the two Cape Town football clubs haven’t allowed themselves to be left behind. Both Engen Santos and Ajax Cape Town are flying high in the Absa Premiership, their youth development programmes are the envy of the rest of the PSL, and this city is the talk of football across the length and breadth of South Africa.

There has been a noticeable increase on the terraces – at both clubs. It’s not yet where we would like it to be, but there is definite movement. Now it’s up to Cape Town football fans to add to this buzz by showing greater interest, getting to the ground, and involving themselves a lot more, so that, when 2010 rolls by, the possibilities created by the new Green Point and Athlone stadia are endless.
