Nedbank Cup build-up part 2: Bevan Fransch

15 April 2008

We continue with our build-up to the Nedbank Cup quarter-final tie against Free State Stars at Goble Park in Bethlehem on Sunday afternoon, with the latest views on the philosophy and allure of cup football by tapping into the thoughts of promising Engen Santos left-back, BEVAN FRANSCH.

Fransch: 'No room for error in Cup clashes'

What is the best cup game you’ve played in?

- That would have to be the 2006 Under-19 Metropolitan Premier Cup Final (also known as the Bayhill) when I was playing for Ajax Cape Town. We beat the University of Pretoria on penalties to win the trophy. That has, so far, been the highlight of my career.

What is the most memorable cup game you’ve watched in South Africa?

-  I would say last year’s Telkom Cup final when Silver Stars hammered Ajax Cape Town, especially Simba Marumo’s sensational performance in that game,

What is the most memorable overseas cup game you’ve watched?

-  Without a doubt, Liverpool’s amazing comeback against AC Milan in the 2005 European Champions League, from 3-0 down to 3-3 and then winning on penalties.

What is the difference in mental approach between a league and a cup game?

 - There are no second chances in a cup game. It’s do-or-die, either you are in or you are out. That means you have to give everything on the day, there’s no room for error. In the league, you can always make up ground, but this is not possible in a cup match, which is why you have to be focused and motivated all the time.

What are Engen Santos’ chances in the Nedbank Cup quarter-final tie against Free State Stars on Sunday?

 - I think we have a very good chance of pulling off the win. Free State Stars have had a dip in form, while we are playing quite well right now. If we perform as we have in recent weeks, then we should be able to win.

Can Engen Santos go all the way to the final of the Nedbank Cup?

 - Yes, we can. Definitely.
