Striker Dipsey Selolwane was the first (he has since moved to Ajax Cape Town), followed by Mogogi Gabonamong, still the strong man of the Santos FC midfield, and highlighted by the arrival head coach David Bright last season.
Now, there’s another – Jerome Ramatlhkwane – and he’s expected to make a major impact on the South African game this season.
Ramatlhkwane - nicknamed JJ – arrived in Cape Town a month ago and signed a three-year-contract with Santos FC.
Last season he played for Mochudi Centre Chiefs in Botswana. His club won the Botswana league title and Ramatlhkwane was the country’s top goalscorer.
So the strong, bustling striker comes here with a big reputation – but he’s not afraid of challenges. In fact, he’s looking forward to it.
“Coming to Cape Town has been fantastic for me,” said Ramatlhkwane. “It’s a journey that has been inspired by others who have gone before… like Dipsey, Gino (Gabonamong) and, of course, coach Bright.
“It shows that as Botswanans we have talent and ability, and can make it as professional players.
“I’ve come here to help Santos achieve success. I want to play well, to get goals and build myself a future as a footballer.
“Obviously, I will have to adapt to the conditions here in South Africa, but I’m confident it can be achieved.”
The weather, though, hasn’t been kind to Ramatlhkwane.
“I’ve been here a month and it has been a cold, windy and rainy period,” he said. "Certainly not the kind of weather I’m used to. So it has been tough to adapt to the change in climate. I’m not used to it, but the club and the team have welcomed me… and that has helped in me getting to grips with things down here.
“Now I just can’t wait for the new season to start, so that I can show what I have to offer.”
