Ask Santos FC new signing, Graham King.
King, from Lentegeur in Mitchell’s Plain, was a hugely promising junior footballer. Stardom was considered to be just a matter of time. Unfortunately, at the time, he believed all the hype and forgot to put in the effort and avoid the pitfalls.
Things fell apart for King – but he’s back, with one last chance here at Santos, and he has promised to make the most of the opportunity.
King takes up the story: “I was spotted by the Ajax Cape Town scouts when I was playing at under-13 level for Bayhill United in Mitchell’s Plain. Romano Scott (current Santos midfielder) and I went for Under-15 trials at Ajax, and were both accepted. From there I progressed right up the ranks into the PSL squad.
“But I got into various bad habits, which I won’t elaborate on, and it all went badly for me. I moved to Maritzburg United, where a number of injuries then set me back even further.
“I’ve learnt from the bad habits and have promised myself to get it together. I think I’m right on track.
“I’m fit and sound, and very, very motivated. This is the chance I’ve been waiting for… now I just want to prove myself.
“I know what I am capable of doing. I know I have the ability. This season I want to go out there, do the best I can, win some silverware, and thank Santos for the opportunity they have given me.”
The South African football landscape is littered with such career disappointments – but, as King suggests, it’s about taking the knocks, heeding the lessons, and then shaping a new future on the right path to success.
King has mapped his new goals, and opposing PSL defenders will have to watch out… the flying winger is on a mission!!
