The Cape side were rather unlucky to lose Musa Otieno early on, while Celtic were fortunate not to have their goalkeeper sent off after just six minutes.
Santos did however get off to a good start and Eleazar Rodgers brought a good save out of goal keeper Patrick Tignyemb with a curling shot after four minutes.
A great through ball from Romano Scott saw Graham King get a clear run in on goal in the sixrh minute.
Tignyemb came out of his box and seemed to make a save using his hands to deny King – the goal keeper appeared fortunate not to be given his marching orders.
The home side soon started to dictate matters, with Solomon Mathe and Marc Mayambela running the show from the middle of the park.
The goal arrived in the 22 nd minute when Geofrey Serunkuma got the better of Mogogi Gabanamong with some neat skill before intelligently chipping the ball over the on-rushing Francis Chansa.
From then on it was Celtic who enjoyed most of the play for the remainder of the first half.
The Bloemfontein heat seemed to take its toll on the Cape side during the second stanza which allowed Phunya Sele Sele to continue to maintain supremacy.
The home side’s tactics saw them keeping the ball and wearing Santos down while probing for openings.
A number of chances were created, but poor finishing saw Celtic failing to add to their tally.
Serunkuma missed a couple of long range efforts and then Dikete Mototo failed to force Chansa into a save when he burst down the left flank on the 66 th minute.
Five minutes later the team in green and white missed another good chance to give themselves a two goal cushion when Patrick Malokase blasted a shot from 10-yards out over the bar.
Rodgers nearly earned Santos a point when his 90th minute header went inches wide, forcing David Bright's men to return home empty handed.
