Superb Santos overcome Amakhosi

6 December 2008

Santos came from a goal behind to seal a stunning 2-1 win over Kaizer Chiefs at the Athlone Stadium on Saturday evening.

Eleazar Rodgers scored Santos' first goal

The result was the People's Team's third straight victory and sees them shoot up into sixth spot on the league table, just five points behind Ajax Cape Town, who beat Orlandi Pirates to make it a 1-2 for Cape Town over the Soweto giants.

The game really showcased Santos' improved performances of late, as well as their character and self-belief, which they needed to come back from the early set-back of conceding the first goal.

The match had a bit of everything – brilliant goals, near misses, shots hitting the woodwork, and goal-keeping blunders.

After a good start to the match by Santos which saw Tyren Arendse hitting the bar with a cross, it was Chiefs who took a 23 rd minute lead.

Zito Ogbanna was the goal scorer, pouncing from close range after a mistake from Santos keeper Francis Chansa.

Graham King nearly equalised for the home side, but his rocket of a shot hit the crossbar, while Erwin Isaacs wasted a great chance when he shot tamely at Amakhosi keeper Ithumeleng Khune after 30 minutes.

The relentless pace and action from the first half was carried into the second stanza as both sides put in maximum effort.

Substitute Jerome Ramathlakwana twice came close for the People’s Team before setting up Eleazar Rodgers to net the equaliser in the 70 th minute.

Rodgers’ finish was from the top drawer as he buried the ball into the side-netting from a very tight angle.

Chiefs substitute Tshepo Bulu nearly put the Soweto side back in front with nine minutes to go, but saw his shot come back off the base of the upright.

The play quickly reverted to the opposite end of the field, where Santos scored what turned out to be the winner after Bongi Macala did just enough to force the ball over the line from close range after a scintillating run by Jurie Basie.

Their was a final twist to the tale at the packed Athlone Stadium when the unfortunate Bulu thumped a 30-yard shot into the upright with the final kick of a thrilling match.
