Santos back in business

26 February 2009

Santos returned to winning ways with a 1-0 win over Moroka Swallows.

The Cape Town side got off to a positive start, illustrated by Romano Scott's fourth minute shot from just outside the box, which Swallows keeper Greg Etafia saved.

Swallows were then shocked when the People's Team took the lead in the sixth minute - Mogogi Gabonamong doing the damage with a header following Graham King's free kick.

The first effort on goal the home side could muster came in the 15th minute when Phumelele Bhengu let fly from 20-yards out, but Santos goal keeper Francis Chansa was up to the challenge.

Davi Afonso then had a good chance to level matters in the 17th minute, but headed over the bar from close range following Sibusiso Khumalo's ball into the box.

Santos looked good for anther goal however and in the 42nd minute King set his sights on goal from the left hand side of the box, but shot over the bar.

The beginning of the second half saw the side trading shots as Cecil Oerson shot wide from 25-yards for Swallows before Tyren Arendse had his effort from the edge of the box saved by Etafia.

Afonso was then guilty of again failing to find the target, this time heading David Radebe's cross over the bar in the 52nd minute.

Swallows were forced to try there luck from range as the People's Team's defence held firm, but Khumalo and Oerson were both off target.

The Birds then went on to miss another great chance to score, this time the culprit was Radebe, who headed the ball off target from just eight yards out in the 57th minute.

The Cape side then had two good opportunities to increase their lead, but Bevan Fransch missed the target from just 12 yards out, while Luyanda Bacela shot wide from even closer in the 70th minute.

Swallows then showed that they were still in the game and were unlucky not to equalise when Lefa Tsutsulupa struck the post from a central position, 18-yards out.

The Birds continued to go for goal and in the 76th minute Chansa had to be on top of his game to tip Ryan Botha's shot round the post.

Botha again tried his luck in the final minute of the game, but it was not to be for the Dube Birds, as Santos held on for the three points.
