Brazilians await the People’s Team

28 February 2009

Having beaten one of the PSL big names on Wednesday, Santos now turn their attention to another giant of South African soccer, Mamelodi Sundowns.

The Brazilians were in excellent form prior to their defeat to Bay United last Sunday, having won five games on the trot.

Having gone down 2-0 to Umlilo, Sundowns will be determined to get their title chase back on track and Santos will have to be wary of a possible backlash.

Thye certainly have the players to cause trouble to any defence - the likes of Surprise Moriri, Collins Mbesuma, Sibusiso Zuma and Benedict Vilakazi can be a handful when in form.

Santos coach David Bright paid tribute to Sundown's good form of late, but believes that the Pretoria side are not always at their best in every game and feels that their inconsistency could provide the People's Team with a good chance of a win.

“Mamelodi Sundowns have been doing well recently, with Michel taking over. He has changed the style, system and whole approach of the team. They have done well in a couple of games, but can not seem to keep up with the consistency like Super Sport United. It is therefore no surprise that they have lost their last game against Bay United and therefore no surprise that we can beat them."

Santos go into the game full of confidence after their win over the Birds, and are also boosted by a clean bill of health.

"There are no serious injuries or suspensions for this match. Jerome Ramathlakwana is still injured, while Wayne Arendse will be back from his suspension (for the match against Swallows). Even though Arendse was suspended he was still with the team for the duration of the Swallows match.”
