Santos looking forward to Milano clash

Santos team manager Yusuf Gester says the People's Team are eagerly awaiting Wednesday night's Nedbank Cup clash with Milano in what is effectively a 'Cape derby'.


Based in Grassy Park, the Vodacom second division side are based just a few kilometres down the road from Santos' Lansdowne academy and the amateur side will no doubt be motivated to the highest degree.

Games of these nature often see the amateur side playing beyond their usual capabilities as they look to catch the eye on the big stage - both at the stadium and on national television.

Gester says that while Santos can take confidence from their recent win in the PSL, the team is wary of not underestimating Milano.

"After bagging all 3 points against Thanda Royal Zulu on Wednesday, 4 March 2009, Santos FC are keen to get their NEDBANK Cup 2009 campaign on the way, against Vodacom league (2nd Division) outfit Milano United.

"The People’s Team are not resting on their laurels, but rather hard at work as they are not undermining the lower league club. Cup competitions can be full of surprises and if complacency sets in, you could find yourselves in a very awkward position. It has been witnessed many times in Cup action that the “Davids oust the Goliaths”.

"Not so long ago in this very competition, Mpumalanga Black Aces (NSL First Division) went all the way to the final, only to lose by the odd goal. We will definitely not make that mistake, but rather make sure that we proceed to the next round.

"Milano is a gutsy and organised amateur team, full of running and can fight to the final minute. What makes this clash even more exciting is the fact that it is indeed marked with a local Cape Town derby flavour.

"The Peoples Team will be at full strength and will go all out to oust their visitors.

"Do not miss the action Engen Santos FC vs Milano United, Wednesday 11 March 2009 at 19h30 at the Athlone Stadium."
