Great results in youth tournaments

23 March 2009

It was an excellent weekend for two of Santos’ junior sides in the Kensington and MC Spurs tournaments.

Two of our teams competed in tournaments from Saturday, 21 st March 2009 until Sunday, 22 nd March 2009. Both teams produced very good results.

KENSINGTON TOURNAMENT

The Under-15 squad with coach Keith America

Our Under 15 team, under Coach Keith America reached the finals on Sunday at the Kensington Tournament, but unfortunately lost to a team with dubious credentials. However there are no complaints - they did very well for their first competition of the new season.

The Results were as follows:

Group Games

Santos FC vs Dalmonds (Draw 1-1) Goal Scorer: Suhayl Allie

Santos FC vs Matroosfontein (Won 1-0) Goal Scorer: Zaahid Van der Schuyf

Santos FC vs FC Ludidi (Draw 1-1) Goal Scorer: Zaahid Van der Schuyf

Quarter Finals

Santos FC vs Kensington (Won 1-0) Goal Scorer : Mickael Cupido

Semi-Final Santos FC vs Ikapa (Won 1-0)

Goal Scorer : Zaahid Van der Schuyf

Final

Santos FC vs FC Ludidi (Draw 2-2)

Lost on penalties. Goal Scorer: Zaahid Van der Schuyf (Both Goals)

The individual awards were as follow:

Man of the Match-Zaahid Van der Schuyf

Player of the Tournament-Jody Okkers

Comment from U/15 Coach, Keith America:

“We have started off very slowly basically trying to find our feet, but it seems that the players peaked at the right time, assisting us to reach the final round of the tournament. I feel proud of my boys, also since they had to play against an older opposition and still redeemed themselves, by only losing out on the final penalty shoot out.

Although we did not walk away as the winners, enough positives for 2009 came out of this tournament! I do not prefer to highlight certain players, but would want to congratulate Tevin Smith and Zaahid Van der Schuyf on their excellent performance during the tournament.”

MC SPURS TOURNAMENT

CONGRATULATIONS TO THE SANTOS FC SUPER LEAGUE TEAM (pictured above)

A combination of our under 17- and under 19 team have competed in the senior MC Spurs tournament in Macassar, under Coach Gordon Witbooi. They have ended up going home with the winning tournament cup.

The Results were as follow:

Group Games

Santos FC vs Seven Stars (Won 4-0)

Santos FC vs Bay View (Won 4-0)

Santos FC vs Ravensmead (Won 1-0)

Quarter Finals

Santos FC vs Ravensmead (Won 2-1)

Santos FC vs Leeds Lentegeur (Won 2-0)

Final

Santos FC vs Kenpark (Won 1-0)

Comment from Coach Gordon Witbooi:

“The tournament team was a combined team of Under 17 and Under 19 Santos FC Players. I have identified Brylon Kyle (Striker) as the player of the tournament, since he is only 17 years of age, but played an excellent game amongst the older players.

”I only had two days time of preparation as a combined group, but was fortunate that the team pulled through, because of the continuation of Santos FC coaching as a whole. As the coach for the weekend’s tournament, I got the combination right with four of the under 17 regular starters in the line up. The team’s performance improved tremendously, the longer the tournament continued.”

Comment from Youth Director and U/17 Coach, Duncan Crowie:

“These tournaments are all a learning experience. By looking at the U/15, the U/17 and U/19 combination it is a great encouragement to see them playing such a good brand of soccer so early in the season. Now the teams just need to prove that they have the ability to repeat this on a regular basis.”

A BIG CONGRATULATION GOES OUT TO ALL THESE PLAYERS AND COACHES INVOLVED, FROM ALL AT SANTOS FC.
