While SuperSport had the better, and the more frequent chances in the first half, the Tshwane side were by no means dominating the game – at times their nerves showed as several set-pieces were wasted.

The home side, under no pressure to get a result, were able to play with a freedom in attack, but although they had their fair share of ball possession in the SuperSport box, visiting keeper Andre Arendse had little work to do.

This was in contrast to home keeper Lee Langeveldt, who had to be well positioned to keep out Masibusane Zongo’s well struck 20 th minute effort, while he also did well to prevent Lance David’s attempted lob from going over his head in the 39 th minute.

That save was preceded by Matsatsantsa’s best chance of the half, which had seen Glen Salmon’s header bouncing back off the cross-bar and into play.

Both side’s had good chances in the opening 15 minutes of the second stanza – Eleazar Rodgers’ well struck volley flew straight at Arendse, while in the 58 th minute Letladi Madubanya found the ball at his feet and the goal at his mercy, but in taking too long to get the shot away, Bongi Macala was able to nip in for Santos and make a vital tackle.

SuperSport were always the more attack minded side, but it was only going to take a few seconds, or a couple of touches for Santos to score the goal which would take the title away from their opponents and they came ever so close in the 70 th minute when Romano Scott sent a shot wide when it looked easier to score.

The final 20 minutes of the game were anxious times for United coach Gavin Hunt, but fortunately for SuperSport, Santos were unable to create any meaningful goal chances and the visiting side were able to hold on for the crucial point that sees them lifting the Absa Premiership trophy for the second year running.
