The EKOC LOC managed to pull off yet another year of great organization with the stands filled with fans from the Plain and surrounding Cape Town areas, to support their favourite teams.
Master of Ceremony, Garin Cavanagh, commanded proceedings on the day with the official opening ceremony featuring local singing sensation Emo followed by Dreamcast who paid tribute to Michael Jackson by performing a special routine honouring the King of Pop.
Once all formalities were concluded, all participating players underwent a specially designed life skills programme by Macsteel Maestros before the next round of games continued.
Speakers at the opening ceremony included: Goolam Allie (Engen Santos Chairman), David Notoane (Engen Santos Coach, Life skills Conductor and former player) and Brad Bergh (Corporate Sponsorship Manager for Engen).
Goolam Allie also honoured one of the biggest People Team Supporters and father of the Engen Santos First Team Manager, Yusuf Gester and youth team coach Ayyoob Gester, who sadly passed away on Saturday evening. “This is a day of good entertainment as well as sadness, as our condolences go out to the Gester family in losing a beloved father, friend, husband and sporting legend. Mr Gester’s legacy will live on in the game of football.”
Mr Allie continued with a message to the Youth: “It took your parents, coaches, friends, business- and older people many years to make major sacrifices for you to enjoy the game and to better communities. We at Engen Santos wish to extend a hand, in continuing this. So from here on today, make sacrifices, in order to reach success! To all good luck, enjoy the tournament and God bless!”
Engen’s Sponsorship Manager Brad Bergh commented, “It is very important for Engen Petroleum to develop youngsters of tomorrow. To the youngsters: Play hard, play fair and may the best team win!”
Providing words of wisdom from Macsteel Maestros, David Notoane commented: “These young players here today must be proud to be part of this great opportunity in competing in one of the country’s biggest tournaments. Life skills is a subject very near to my heart; it is there to teach young aspirant football players the necessary tools to achieve their dreams, desires and aspirations in life! Pride, passion and humbleness is the three keys to success in life!”
Engen Santos kicked off their first match against Provincial Academy, which ended up in a much deserved 1-1 draw. The second game against Milano United ended up in a 4-0 victory for the People’s Team!
