Santos sunk by late goal
13 September 2009
Moroka Swallows scored their second consecutive win of the season with a 1-0 victory over Santos at the Dobsonville Stadium on Sunday afternoon
The Cape side immediately found themselves on the back foot as they faced an onslaught from Swallows soon after the game kicked off.
But for the most part, the Peoples' Team were able to keep the Birds at bay with some determined defending - the home side's early chances were limited to an of-target shot from Sibusiso Khumalo.
Siyabonga Nomvethe had a good opportunity in the 25th minute to capitalise on Swallows' superiority, but missed the target from only eight yards out after a cross from Collins Mbesuma.
Davi Rancan did better with his shot in the 28th minute, which was very much goal-bound until Santos keeper Tshepo Motsoeneng did well to blocked the effort with his feet.
Swallows continued to make the running for the remainder of the second half, but just could not get on the score-sheet as Nomvethe missed two more chances, while Igor Alves' 25-yard effort in the 42nd minute was saved by Motsoeneng.
Former Bafana Bafana striker Siyabonga Nomvethe enjoyed most of Swallows' chances in the second half, but was guilty on several occasions of missing the target.
The final stages of the game saw the People’s Team making a positive impression in attack as first Phikolethu Spelman struck the cross bar with a header, and then Erwin Isaacs had a close range shot blocked.
But Sibusiso Khumalo popped up at just the right time for Swallows, crashing a shot from outside the box into the top corner of the net for an 86th minute winner.
