Santos draw with EzenKosi

16 September 2009

Santos created the better chances of the night and were unlucky to come away with a 1-1 draw against Jomo Cosmos at Newlands on Wednesday.

Graham King opened the scoring for the Cape side just two minutes into the second half but striker Sekou Camara scored on his debut after 72 minutes to claim a share of the spoils.

Both teams had plenty of chances throughout a very open match with Santos enjoying the majority of the first-half possession.

And to that effect, The People's Team nearly broke the deadlock after two minutes when Phikolethu Spelman hit a rasping shot from the edge of the box but his effort cannoned out off the cross bar.

At the other end Bamuza Sono was proving to be a handful for the home side with his movement and passing and tested Tshepo Motsoeneng with an early shot but the effort failed to unsettle the Santos keeper.

Spelman then came close with a diving header for Boebie Solomons' men as he flung himself at Erwin Isaacs' whipped-in cross, but the ball skidded off the wet surface and away from the danger zone.

Tyren Arendse had arguably the best chance of the game, in the 32nd minute, when he forced a finger-tip save from Avril Phali. Isaacs laid the ball back to the midfielder, who then curled the ball towards the top right-hand corner of the keeper's net.

Cosmos' best chance of the half came from the goal scorer in the 40th minute as he forced a brilliant one-handed save from Motsoeneng.

Camara hit an audacious shot with the outside of his boot from the right-hand side of the pitch that the Santos keeper did well to steer away from goal.

Both sides emerged for the second period looking for an opener but it was Santos that took the lead.

King reacted to a flick from Bonginkosi Macala as he stooped low in front of defender Larry Cohen to direct his header past a stranded Phali.

The goal further sparked Santos to life and they looked dangerous with crosses being whipped in from both flanks.

To take advantage of this, and in a move that Solomons may well regret, the hard-working Macala, was replaced with the lanky Eleazar Rodgers.

Having been the supplier for much of the game, Spelman almost added a second for his side in the 71st minute with a header that brought another good save from Phali.

But barely a minute later the scores were level as Camara got his head to Bongani Theletsane's low cross.

Theletsane was only introduced in the second period, but showed some sublime skill to get the better of Thabiso Ntloana on the left flank before finding the Mali striker in the box.

With their tails up, Cosmos pushed for a second while Santos struggled to find the kind of rhythm that they had previously displayed.

Spelman hit his late free-kick over the cross bar, and Santos had to settle for a point.
