Mogogi: Team Spirit is High
9 October 2009
Santos skipper Mogogi Gabonamong says that the positive vibe in the Peoples' Team's camp bodes well for the season ahead.
The signs are certainly looking good for the team early on.
As they occupy fifth position with 15 points from nine games, coach Boebie Solomons has had the luxury of having very few injury concerns so far, while the club’s newly-signed players have all settled in well and have made positive contributions.
Gabonamong believes that the squad's consistency over the past few seasons will now begin to shine through: both on and off the field, the Santos players have forged a close bond and good understanding.
“This team has been together for a while now. The likes of Musa Otieno, Eleazar Rodgers, Irwin Isaacs and me have played here for a while and we understand each other well.
“Because of our friendship on and off the field we know what we want as individuals and more importantly for Santos. It is our aim to compete for the league, anything less is an insult,” he is reported as saying on the PSL website.
At the same time, the Botswana international admits its still early days in the league title race:
“We are in a comfortable position but we dropped points here and there so our position could have been better. It’s still early days though and I am not going to focus on the log standings now.”
“A team in the bottom half can win two wins and move three or four places so to say we are up there means little. There are still many games to play.”
Gabonamong has been converted from a central midfielder to a centre back in recent seasons to great effect - the last two seasons he has won the club's Player of the Season award.
