Santos Legends: Jean-Marc Ithier

13 October 2009

Today we kick off a new series on santosfc.co.za, where we will be interviewing former playing legends of the club who are still with the club today.

While it is helpful for continuity and in keeping club principles and ethics alive that former players are employed by the club after their careers on the field have finished, it also highlights the tight-knit family environment and unity at the club that so many ex-pros are employed in office or coaching roles.

We kick off the new series by chatting to Jean-Marc Ithier, now the assistant coach at the club.

The powerful Mauritian played for the Peoples’ Team during one of the club’s most successful spells in it’s history, and terrorised PSL defenders with his strength and directness in front of goal.

1. Name: Jean-Marc Ithier

2. Brief description of your playing career at Santos:

Years played at club: 6 Years
Position played: Striker
Coaches played under: Boebie Solomons, Clive Barker, Gordon Igesund, Mushin Ertugral, Roger De Sa

3. How and why did you join Santos? What makes Santos special / different from other clubs?

I was approached by Santos Management after an international game between RSA and Mauritius. I wanted to play professional football overseas. At Santos there is a family environment.

4. Any special memories?

Lots of special memories. The four trophies that we have won during my playing days. Bob Save, the League 2000/01; ABSA Cup and Top8.

I have been the top goal scorer for Santos every season that I have played.

Team honours, same as above.

Lots of interesting stories from team mates, coaches and club staff. All with different “flavours”, but great experience.

7. Your most memorable match you played in?

There are lots, but if I have to pick one it would be the one against Pirates at the Green Point Stadium. It was a league decider and I scored the winning

goal (1-0).

8. Best goal you scored and / or witnessed at the club?

My best goal was in the ABSA Cup at Athlone Stadium, where I spotted the opposition keeper off his line and I took a shot from my own half and scored.

9. Opponents you liked playing against?

I always enjoyed playing against good and clever defenders.

10. Opponents you hated playing against?

Those who do not understand football and have no football intelligence.
