Santos 0-1 Chiefs

20 November 2009

Santos lost 1-0 to Kaizer Chiefs at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium on Friday night, but can count themselves as very unlucky after having had a late goal ruled out

In an evenly balanced game, the People’s Team were denied a point when striker Eleazar Rodgers was denied what looked to be a perfectly legitimate goal.

To make matters worse, the referee appeared first to point to the spot, but then changed his mind and awarded a drop-ball, which Chiefs kicked to safety.

Santos also had to play the final 25 minutes of the game with 10 men after Thabiso Ntloana had been red carded.

Chiefs had most early chances, but Reneilwe Letsholonyane and Nkosinathi Nhleko shot weakly at Tshepo Motsoeneng.
Santos’ had opportunities via the free kick route, but Erwin Isaacs was unable to find the target with two efforts from around 30-yards out.

In the 38 th minute Chiefs defender Thabang Rooi almost got in at the near post to poke home a cross from Letsholonyane, but he was unable to score as Santos keeper Tshepo Motsoeneng made a telling block.

Five minutes later the Peoples’ Team countered to great effect up the right wing with Thabiso Ntloana and Ryan Chapman, but the end product was lacking as Phikolethu Spelman failed to link up with Graham King to good effect.

The Cape Town team who created a wonderful opportunity in the 51 st minute when King got in behind the Chiefs defence and pulled the ball back for Spelman, who was however not clinical enough with his finish which cannoned into a defender.

Ten minutes later the first goal of the evening materialised when Letsholonyane slotted into an empty net from 14-yards out after Motsoeneng was unable to hold onto Nale’s square ball.

Things got even worse for the People’s Team in the 64 th minute when Ntloana was given a straight red for a foul on Nhleko, who came close to doubling Chiefs’ lead in the 69 th minute when his shot from a tight angle was blocked at the near post by Motsoeneng.

The Cape side’s chances to equalise were few and far between, with the first decent chance coming eight minutes from time when Eleazar Rodgers flicked the ball on for King, but his right-footed volley flew straight at Bartman.

Five minutes before the end of the match there was major confusion as the game was held up for several minutes after Rodgers’ goal was disallowed, despite replays showing that the ball appeared to have crossed the line.
