Santos were included in the latest initiative being conducted by Cape Mental Health and which took place on the premises of Eerste River Secondary School On Thursday.
Our delegation consisted of 3 PSL players – Tyren Arendse, Eleazar Rodgers and Wayne Arendse – who were accompanied by the team manager together with Chantel Olivier and Eric Dalton.
They invited 50 pupils each from Eerste River Secondary School and Voorbrug High School to listen to addresses by various speakers (including Ms Ellen Parkies) on subjects like drug addiction, how to bring sports into their lives, gang fights and shootings in their areas and how these affected their school and home lives.
Eric Dalton was asked to address the gathering on Santos Football club and foreign members of their PSL team.
Then Tyren addressed the pupils on drug addiction in Eerste River, respect for parents and teachers as well as begging them to stay off the streets and rather to concentrate on their school work as this would impact on their future lives.
Being a well-known person from their area, Tyren was tremendously well received by all and hopefully they absorbed some of what he had to say to them.
On a light hearted note, they then organized a competition between the two schools present featuring three aspects of soccer – tapping, heading and striking. The schools each chose three representatives and Eleazar gave a demonstration of the three aspects before taking charge and running the competition.
It reached an exciting climax requiring a shootout. The winners were the hosts Eerste River Secondary who were given a SANTOS shirt signed by the whole PSL squad.
The club was also presented with a certificate/diploma of appreciation by Cape Mental Health for our efforts in making the event such a success.
The three players then did an autographing session/photo-shoot for all the pupils and everyone was presented with a SANTOS memento of the occasion.
Letter from
a Cape Mental Health representative
I would just like to take the time out to express my team's sincere thanks & gratitude, to you, the players, Eric & Chantel.
We thoroughly enjoyed the players performance and interaction with the learners.
This day would not have been possible, without you guys. You really live up to the teams "other name"; without a doubt you are the Peoples Team. I sincerely hope that today is the start of our future partnership.
Kind regards,
Jeffey
